• March 6, 2020, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf declared the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 a disaster emergency throughout the commonwealth. Wolf authorized the adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Anthony Carrelli, to place on active duty “such individuals and units of the Pennsylvania National Guard, for missions designated by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, as are needed to address the consequences of the aforementioned emergency.”

• March 14, six subject matter expert planners were placed on state active duty to assist PEMA.

• March 16, Task Force Support, Task Force Aviation, PTF North, PTF South, and PTF West were activation in anticipation of providing support to the COVID-19 response.

• March 17, approximately 50 Pennsylvania National Guardsmen were placed on state active duty to provide transportation to support 38 Pennsylvania residents who had been quarantined at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga. The group was flown to the Harrisburg International Airport in Middletown, Pa. and individually driven by Guardsmen to their homes throughout the commonwealth. The residents, who were aboard the Grand Princess Cruise Ship prior to their quarantine have been determined to be asymptomatic but remained in isolation until test results are returned.

• March 21, approximately 80 members of the Pennsylvania National Guard were directed by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to support Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency in establishing the first mass testing site for Coronavirus 2019 in Upper Dublin Township. In efforts to curb the COVID-19 public health emergency, the PA National Guard worked with Montgomery County officials, Upper Dublin Township, Temple University and other state and federal partners to open a drive-through testing location at Temple University’s Ambler Campus.

• March 24, 11 Pa. Guard members were activated to support PEMA and the Pa. Department of Health with conducting warehouse operations for coronavirus-related supplies at a DoH facility in Harrisburg.

• March 28, 25 Pennsylvania National Guardsmen provide logistical assistance to FEMA at the Glen Mills School in the Philadelphia suburbs, unloading federal equipment to establish a federal medical station. Federal, state and local assets are coming together to open this facility which can house non-COVID 19 patients with less severe conditions if and when regional hospitals become full. The Soldiers are from the 103rd Engineer Battalion and spent two days unloading trucks, unpacking boxes and setting up beds.

• April 2, 17 Pennsylvania National Guard members were activated by PEMA to support a food bank in Pittsburgh. The soldiers, all members of the 128th Brigade Support Battalion, are assisting with the mass packing of emergency food boxes, large scale drive-up distributions and general operations at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

• April 5, the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 3rd Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Task Force completed its mission at the Montgomery County, Pa. COVID-19 testing site that began March 21, and returned to Fort Indiantown Gap.

• Beginning April 7, Pennsylvania National Guard transportation units will be used to assist the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services in the dissemination of meals to dozens of distribution centers across the commonwealth. By April 24, the Task Force Support units delivered over 500,000 meals to help resupply county emergency management agencies, senior citizen centers, food banks and other charitable organizations.

• April 18, the Pennsylvania National Guard provided several days of staffing assistance to the Broomhall Rehabilitation and Nursing facility.  

• April 19, Pennsylvania National Guardsmen conducted training with officials from the Pa. Dept. of Health and PEMA in preparation for  a COVID-19 testing site at the Moehgan Sun Arena parking lot. The test site opened April 20 to first responders and April 21 to the public.

• Beginning April 28, Nearly 60 Pennsylvania National Guard members have been activated to take part in a mortuary-affairs support mission. The mission entails assisting local medical examiners from five Pennsylvania counties – Philadelphia, Chester, Delaware, Bucks, and Montgomery – in the transportation of remains to their central collection locations. This is a joint mission that involves Army and Air National Guard mortuary affairs teams assigned to Pennsylvania’s Southeast counties which have been hardest hit by the COVID-19 virus.

• May 19, began mobile testing to assist long-term care facilities throughout the Commonwealth.
