28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade
Commander: Lt. Col. Michael Girvin
Senior Enlisted Advisor: Command Sgt. Maj. Jeff Huttle
The 28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade is a heavy aviation unit of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. The 28th ECAB is one of five brigades of the 28th Infantry Division. It provides aviation assets for both federal and state active duty missions. ECAB aviators fly the AH-64 Apache, UH-60 Black Hawk, UH-72 Lakota and CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The ECAB headquarters is at Muir Army Airfield at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania.
The 28th ECAB traces its lineage to June 1, 1959 with the activation of the 28th Aviation Company at Capital City Airport in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. The unit was reorganized as the 28th Aviation Battalion on April 1st, 1963. On October 1, 1986, the Aviation Brigade was organized under the Army of Excellence (AOE) design and relocated to Fort Indiantown Gap. More than 2,000 28th CAB soldiers mobilized in January 2009 for Operation Iraqi Freedom and operated out of multiple bases across Iraq including in Tallil, Al Kut and Basrah.
In July 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the brigade embarked on a year-long deployment to the Middle East where they served in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the fight against Daesh, and Operation Spartan Shield, the U.S. military posture in Southwest Asia. They were spread across 13 different locations in Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
28th ECAB soldiers have served domestically, assisting civil authorities with emergency relief missions, and overseas in places including Kosovo and Afghanistan. Some have made the ultimate sacrifice, and many have been recognized for their dedicated service and valor. The 28th ECAB continues to build on its legacy as the “Wings of Iron” and we take pride in being fit, resilient and well-trained in order to support each other and defend our great nation.Units within the organization:
