The Pennsylvania National Guard traces its roots to 1747, when Benjamin Franklin established The Associators in Philadelphia to provide for a common defense against raiders and privateers. For 275 years, Pennsylvanians from all walks have life have answered the call to serve their Community, their Commonwealth and their Country when needed.
Today, the Pennsylvania National Guard comprises nearly 18,000 Airmen and Soldiers, making it the second-largest state National Guard in the country. The Pennsylvania National Guard is divided into the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and it has units in more than 60 communities throughout Pennsylvania.

Military Family Education Program
A unique benefit to the Pennsylvania National Guard is the Military Family Education Program (MFEP). Known as the Pennsylvania G.I. Bill, this bill allows spouses and children of Pennsylvania National Guard members to attend college at no cost or at a reduced cost.
Under the PA G.I. Bill, Pennsylvania National Guard members who commit to an additional six years of service can receive five years of higher education benefits for their spouses and children. The program will provide for 10 semesters of tuition-free education for family member(s).
